Skinned Knees

I'm glad Alec doesn't have my low threshhold for pain. He fell down and skinned both knees and was right back up again. You know what really bugged him? The Band-Aids I made him wear because I was just reading an article about that antibiotic-resistant super-germ staph whatzit. When I was a kid you could get mosquito bites and not have to worry about West Nile Virus and feed the ducks without a thought of avian flu.

Crazy Boy

Tonight we took Alec out for ice cream, and he got that "ice cream cough." (You may remember he was pretty sick not long ago.) He got really concerned, apparently thinking that he is sick. "No sick, no want it, no sick," he cried. We kept telling him he was just fine, but every time he coughed he got worried again.

Sums It Up

Today Alec said something I thought was cute and hilarious. I bet if he says it in five years I won't think so. A couple of nights ago, Tom's cousin Nick was over, and his girlfriend brought her friend, Misty. Alec played crazily with them and was especially fond of Misty. Tonight, we went to the mall because Misty is the stock supervisor at the store that sells my favorite underpants. I thought Alec would be thrilled to see her, but instead, he started squirming and whimpering and said, "I don't feel like it!"

'So Cute'

Alec's latest thing is to admire things that are "cute," in his view. This started when he picked up, so gently, a Littlest Pet Shop kitten and said, "So cute!" Since then he's called various other things "so cute," most notable a mole on my chin that I have never personally considered cute at all.

Kodachrome Not

Back when I had access to a darkroom, I shot film like it was free. Now, I'm pretty much all digital. The "pretty much" is because I don't altogether "trust" digital, with its impermanence and crummy flash job. So, I keep my point-and-shoot and some disposable cameras on hand to snap a shot from time to time. These pictures were shot one year apart (which may explain the poor quality) with my trusty Pentax K-1000, purchased my freshman year of college at Kmart by my mom for Beginning Photojournalism with Wayne Miller. Posted by Picasa

Snot Patrol

Alec is around the bend and on the mend, other than some residual snot and some wicked antibiotic-spawned diarrhea that looks like Smokin' Mo's barbecue sauce.
His near-recovery is thanks to:
juice mixed with Hansen's soda
plastic dinosaurs
eating on the couch
Pedialyte pops
mass OTC drugs
Secret of NIMH DVD
Land Before Time trailers on www.imdb.com

Gix Out

Alec has a cold, poor little shaver, and for some reason both of us are covered with snot.
His latest thing, besides misprouncing "get" as "gix," as in "gix mocha wit lick-lick," is marveling at how everything he eats ends up in his tummy--or so he's been told. He'll eat or drink something and then ask incredulously, pointing to his tummy, "Soup in there? In tummy?" Then he laughs. Posted by Picasa

Weekend Worriers

While Jody napped and Alec was spoiled rotten by Grandma and Gram, Tom and I managed to paint the entryway and living room in loverly bungalow colors. We hadn't painted when we moved in, and the entire house had been industrial-sprayed in a putrid peach color with random spackle for visual interest. We're really pleased with how it turned out. But we were without our monkey boy from 8 a.m. till 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, plus several hours on Friday and Monday. We missed him a lot, but he was having the time of his life. Grandma lets him do whatever he wants (hours of dino movie; dinos eating Play-Doh, dinos eating My Little Pony...) and nothing he doesn't (wash hair, stop playing dinos to eat). Whenever we'd go to see him he'd cling to Grandma and say, "No want!" Thanks a lot, buddy. I'll post pix of the paint job when we get stuff moved back into place. Posted by Picasa

Alec's Shiny New Year
